Safe Spaces Project is dedicated…
to strengthening, and creating, welcoming spaces that foster the development and flourishing of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) youth.
The Safe Spaces Project supports organizations that provide safe space for LGBTQ youth through capacity building and technical assistance.
We define “safe space” for LGBTQ youth as:
- affirming and welcoming of LGBTQ youth;
- being aware of their specific needs, perspectives, and strengths;
- willing and able to meet their needs; and
- operating from a Advancing/Positive Youth Development approach for all youth.
We invite nonprofit organizations working to create safe spaces for LGBTQ youth (ages 13-25) to submit inquiries for capacity building support and technical assistance services.
Our Vision and Mission
The mission of the Safe Spaces Project is to work with community-based organizations to strengthen and create welcoming spaces and resources that foster the development and flourishing of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or Questioning (LGBTQ) youth.
We envision a world in which LGBTQ youth are able to develop themselves and their capabilities fully as they transition to adulthood. We hope that LGBTQ youth in every city, town and county in the United States will be able to draw upon the resources they need (peers, adults, allies, and welcoming spaces) to provide support in school, at play, at home and in the community. We look forward to all LGBTQ youth being seen not as at-risk, but as assets and positive contributors to their families, friends and communities.
The Safe Spaces Project was incubated at the Chasdrew Fund.
The Safe Spaces Project is a project of Tides Center, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that works with individuals and institutions committed to positive social change.
